Styling your Christmas with Jo Butters, Creative Designer

Styling your Christmas with Jo Butters, Creative Designer

As Christmas approaches, I can’t help but feel a little nostalgic. Thoughts of Christmas’s past in my home county of Norfolk, build up the all too familiar excitement that I associate with the festive season.

In this week’s blog, I’ll be talking you through my Christmas, how I style my own home ready for the festivities, and what Christmas means to me and my family, with the odd little tip for creating the perfect Christmas atmosphere along the way.

Décor around the house

I find that I tend to style my home quite differently for Christmas compared to how I would during other seasons. Decorations are not just confined to the lounge, why not take them all over the house.

I adorn my home with decorations in places that I like to keep clear and neutral for the rest of the year – they help to create a feeling of cosiness and warmth which is needed as the British winter draws in.

Greenery is important. I pick Holly and Ivy from the garden and tie loose hand wreaths for the door with some more staple baubles or a pop of colour to form a backbone. I love eucalyptus at the moment – a handful from your local florist will make the perfect addition to your Christmas wreath.

Creating an Atmosphere

I also find that smells can make or break a festive atmosphere. I often use an empty jam jar as a tealight holder wrapped in a sprig of rosemary. The warming rosemary gives off a beautiful faint scent, building on the festive ambiance.

The Perfect Christmas Tree

Every year my fiancé and I buy a new decoration for our Christmas tree – something meaningful that we have chosen together.

Why not choose a colour theme for your baubles based on the current trends this year or I always choose something quite traditional in colour.

From a delicate handmade bauble from the Eden Project, to a Scuba Diving Santa we picked up on our travels in Australia, each of our decorations mean something to us.

Each year we carefully unwrap them, and December becomes a trip down memory lane. Each and every decoration you retrieve has a different connection. This makes styling your home for Christmas more of an occasion.

I am very much looking forward to styling my home this Christmas, using it as a time to be together with my family and create the perfect festive atmosphere.
